Etos kulturowy ogrodów Czartoryskich w Puławach stanowi wieloaspektowe studium poświęcone fenomenowi ogrodu jako przestrzeni kulturowej, symbolicznej i społecznej w epoce oświecenia i wczesnego romantyzmu. Autorka analizuje ogrody puławskie jako jeden z najważniejszych projektów ideowych i artystycznych przełomu XVIII i XIX wieku, związany z działalnością Izabeli Czartoryskiej.
Praca ukazuje ogród nie tylko jako dzieło sztuki ogrodowej, lecz także jako medium pamięci, tożsamości narodowej i formacji obywatelskiej. Alina Aleksandrowicz’s book At the “Threshold” of the Gardens: The Cultural Ethos of the Czartoryski Gardens in Puławy offers a comprehensive study of the garden as a cultural, symbolic, and social space in the Enlightenment and early Romantic periods. The author examines the Puławy gardens as one of the most significant ideological and artistic projects at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, closely associated with the activity of Princess Izabela Czartoryska.
The garden is interpreted not only as a work of landscape art but also as a medium of memory, national identity, and civic education. Central to the analysis is the concept of the garden ethos, understood as a system of aesthetic, moral, and educational values expressed through landscape design, plant symbolism, garden architecture, and everyday as well as festive practices.
The book discusses, among other topics, the landscape garden model, the cultural symbolism of trees, the garden as a space of play (homo ludens), and the garden of memory, where nature participates in shaping historical and patriotic narratives. The study is based on extensive source material, including literary texts, garden treatises, correspondence, iconography, and contemporary accounts.
This publication makes a significant contribution to studies of cultural history, landscape art, and aesthetic thought, highlighting the role of gardens in the formation of modern cultural sensibilities.



L’ouvrage d’Alina Aleksandrowicz Aux « portes » des jardins. L’éthos culturel des jardins des Czartoryski à Puławy propose une analyse approfondie du jardin comme espace culturel, symbolique et social à l’époque des Lumières et du premier romantisme. L’auteure étudie les jardins de Puławy comme l’un des projets idéologiques et artistiques majeurs du tournant des XVIIIᵉ et XIXᵉ siècles, étroitement liés à l’activité d’Izabela Czartoryska.
Le jardin y est envisagé non seulement comme une œuvre d’art paysager, mais aussi comme un vecteur de mémoire, d’identité nationale et de formation civique. Une place centrale est accordée à la notion d’éthos du jardin, comprise comme un ensemble de valeurs esthétiques, morales et éducatives exprimées par le paysage, la symbolique végétale, l’architecture des jardins et les pratiques quotidiennes et ludiques.
L’ouvrage aborde notamment le modèle du jardin paysager, le rôle symbolique des arbres, le jardin comme espace du jeu (homo ludens), ainsi que le jardin de la mémoire, où la nature participe à la construction de récits historiques et patriotiques. L’analyse repose sur un vaste corpus de sources : textes littéraires, traités de jardins, correspondance, iconographie et témoignages contemporains.
Ce livre constitue une contribution importante à l’histoire culturelle, à l’histoire de l’art des jardins et à l’étude de la pensée esthétique, en soulignant le rôle du paysage dans la formation de la sensibilité culturelle moderne.
